Packed with essential nutrients, vitamins, and minerals, Broccoli stem is hailed as a superfood. If consumed daily, it may help prevent the occurrence or progression of several diseases including cardiovascular diseases, cataracts, cancer, and anemia.
According to an estimation, a 100 g serving of Broccoli provides a substantial nutritional boost. With 34 calories, it offers vitamin C and fiber, perfect for diet-conscious people.
Its high Vitamin C content helps strengthen the immune system and promotes collagen synthesis, wound healing, and iron absorption in the body. Besides, it is an excellent source of vitamin K, which is essential for bone health.
However, many of us unknowingly reduce the health benefits of this cruciferous vegetable through improper preparation. We discard its stems before boiling broccoli which not only leads to unnecessary food waste but also results in loss of vital minerals. This is because stems are packed with as many nutrients as the florets.
To address this common issue, a TikTok account named My Real Food shared a video that has been circulating on the social media platform.
“All you need to do is submerge the head of the broccoli into boiling water and then you can cut [the florets] super easy and quick,” the video explains.
After boiling the head, easily separate the florets. Slice the stem and fry it with oil and soy sauce to make a nutritious and super easy side dish.
It is not the first time that My Real Food shared a life-saving food hack. The account boasts more than 38000 and is famous for sharing healthy recipes and innovative food hacks. The video received a massive response from the audience. Viewers flocked to the comment section to praise the idea.
Many people even shared their personal experiences of eating broccoli stem raw. One person said “It’s delicious. I even eat it raw. It’s crunchy and slightly sweet,” one person noted.
Another commentator added, “I love this idea!” Another agreed, commenting, “Finally, someone who uses the stem, which is the most valuable part.” A third viewer went so far as to brand the tip as ‘genius.’
